    About Johnathon Fortune

Sometimes you just need to talk with someone who gets it. I am a strong communicator who is professional and calm under pressure and I provide empathetic, welcoming, evidence-based engagement and support. I bring lived experience, compassion & understanding to the work. My specialties include working with men, folks under the 2SLGBTQI+ umbrella, mental illness, gender identity, sexual orientation, substance use, coming out, identity issues, self-esteem, relationships with self and others, systemic oppression(s), and working through trauma. I prioritize the development of the therapeutic relationship between you and I, at a solution-focused pace that fits your needs. I will provide you with a compassionate & nurturing environment, so together we can explore new areas of yourself & life through a trauma-informed, strengths-based & anti-oppressive perspective. I approach my work with clients in a way that is client-centred, highly ethical, harm reduction oriented and trauma-informed. In this, I work from an anti-oppressive lens, where I acknowledge systems of Racism, Sexism, Heterosexism, Transphobia, Fatphobia, Ableism, and other oppressive systems that affect how folks navigate the world. Do you find yourself having challenges coping with anxiety, depression, stress, life transitions, relationships, identity, and/or grief & loss? Do you find past trauma resurfacing? Do you want to find new ways to cope and build self-esteem? Reaching out for support is not always easy, especially for vulnerable & marginalized communities who have been silenced, erased & devalued. I have over 10 years of related experience with a diploma in Child and Youth Care from New Brunswick Community College, a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Calgary, and a Master of Social Work from Wilfrid Laurier University.

Are you ready to take the first step?

    My Values

    Confidentiality

Confidentiality is a respected part of social worker's code of ethics. I understand that for people to feel comfortable talking about private and revealing information, they need a safe place to talk about anything they'd like, without fear of that information leaving the room. I take your privacy very seriously, with only a few limitations.

    Creativity

Creativity can manifest in many ways. The act of creating something new helps make life more meaningful. I use creativity to help you develop your sense of self. You can learn to see the world through new perspectives and explore ways to solve any number of challenges.

    Compassion

Thich Nhat Hanh, a Buddhist monk, stated “Whenever any kind of suffering arises, even if it’s minor or subtle, recognize that it is there and send it compassion.” This simple practice is powerful. The therapeutic process can help you let go of whatever is bothering you and live more fully in the present moment.

    Acceptance

In psychology, acceptance is closely linked to allowing, and to the present moment. What is happening right here and now, what are you feeling in this moment? And can you allow that to be what it is? Acceptance is also allowing you to be yourself, whoever you are, without judgement.
