Social Work Practicum

Learn, Grow, and Build Your Clinical Confidence

At Theragen Counselling and Consulting, we are passionate about supporting the next generation of social workers. We offer meaningful practicum placements for social work students who want hands-on experience in a private practice setting while being supported in their growth as developing professionals.

A practicum at Theragen is more than observation hours and task completion. It is an opportunity to deepen your clinical understanding, strengthen your professional identity, and learn what it looks like to bring your values into real-world practice.

Whether you are interested in mental health, private practice, ADHD support, community partnerships, men’s mental health, youth programming, or learning how a growing counselling practice operates behind the scenes, we aim to create a placement experience that is engaging, supportive, and rooted in mentorship.

What Makes a Practicum at Theragen Different?

Theragen is a private mental health practice based in Grande Prairie, Alberta. Our work is grounded in compassion, curiosity, authenticity, and a commitment to helping people reconnect with themselves in meaningful ways.

For practicum students, this means the opportunity to learn in an environment that values both clinical skill and human connection.

Depending on your learning goals, placement opportunities may include exposure to:

  • private practice social work

  • client intake and administrative systems

  • shadowing therapy sessions when appropriate

  • ADHD brain training programming

  • youth and family support services

  • psychoeducation and resource development

  • case consultation and team discussions

  • ethical and professional practice in a counselling setting

  • program development and community partnership work

  • understanding documentation, boundaries, and practice standards

We want students to leave their practicum with more confidence, more clarity, and a stronger sense of who they are becoming as social workers.

Who This Placement May Be a Good Fit For

A practicum at Theragen may be a good fit for students who:

  • are completing a diploma, BSW or MSW practicum

  • are curious about clinical social work or private practice

  • want experience in a mental health setting

  • value reflection, feedback, and professional growth

  • are interested in learning about both direct practice and the business side of counselling services

  • are comfortable taking initiative while also asking questions

  • want to develop confidence in professional communication, documentation, and therapeutic presence

You do not need to have everything figured out before starting. We welcome students who are ready to learn, open to feedback, and interested in growing their skills in a supportive setting.

What Students Can Expect

We aim to make practicum placements meaningful, structured, and supportive. Students can expect a placement experience that includes clear expectations, regular supervision, opportunities for reflection, and exposure to the realities of practice.

Depending on the role and scope of the practicum, students may be involved in a combination of:

  • front desk and administrative support

  • client communication and scheduling processes

  • observing counselling or psychoeducational work where appropriate

  • facilitating counselling or psychoeducational work where appropriate

  • helping create resources, handouts, or workshop materials

  • participating in team meetings or consultations

  • contributing to program planning and community-based projects

  • learning about documentation, ethics, and private practice systems

Each placement is shaped by student learning objectives, availability, school requirements, and the needs of the practice.

Our Approach to Supervision

We believe supervision should be a space for learning, reflection, encouragement, and honest conversation. At Theragen, practicum students receive support that helps connect theory to practice while building confidence over time.

Supervision may include:

  • reviewing student goals and learning plans

  • reflecting on client work or observations

  • discussing ethics, boundaries, and self-of-the-professional use

  • building confidence in communication and professionalism

  • exploring therapeutic approaches and case conceptualization

  • identifying strengths and areas for continued growth

Our hope is that students feel both challenged and supported throughout their placement.
